Field of Emphasis in Writing

This field of emphasis is offered for both English and non-English majors. Students may choose to focus on creative writing, business and technical writing, mass media writing, or science-related writing. Beginning with a core group of required writing courses, students may choose from a wide variety of elective writing courses that best meet career needs.

I. Required Courses

ENGL 2000 Expository Writing (2 credits)
ENGL 3000 Advanced Prose Writing (4 credits)
ENGL 3780 The English Language (4 credits)

Subtotal 10 Credits

II. Required Elective Specialization

Students must select 8 additional semester credits in one or more of the following specializations:

A. Creative Writing Updated:

ENGL 2010 Introduction to Writing Fiction (2 credits)
ENGL 2020 Introduction to Writing Poetry (2 credits)
ENGL 2030 Introduction to Scriptwriting and Playwriting (2 credits)
ENGL 3010 Advanced Fiction Writing (4 credits)
ENGL 3020 Advanced Poetry Writing (4 credits)
ENGL 3030 Advanced Scriptwriting (2 credits)

Creative writing students may substitute one or more of the following courses for those in A. above: ENGL 1200, ENGL 1210, ENGL 1220, ENGL 1230, ENGL 1240, ENGL 4370, or ENGL 4770.

B. Business and Related Fields

ENGL 2100 Technical Writing (2 credits)

C. Scientific Fields

BIOL 3130 Scientific Communication in Biology (2 credits)
ENGL 2100 Technical Writing (2 credits)

D. Mass Media

MASC 2440 News Reporting/Print (3 credits)
MASC 4440 Advanced Media Writing and Editing (4 credits)

Subtotal 8 Credits

Total Semester Credits Required for Field Of Emphasis 18 Credits
