Areas of Study

Music is the personal expression of human existence. It utilizes the organization of sound and silence, and relies on four major principles: theory, aesthetics, performance, and history. Musicians create music through composition, which is the rendering of original thought into a musical score, and through performance, which brings the score to life.

Music students study and practice composition, and develop their performance capabilities through private applied study, the study of the foundations of music, and performance opportunities.

The Music Department prepares students for teaching music as well as for baccalaureate preparation for advanced study in music. It also fosters involvement with music through Liberal Education courses, public performances, and music camps.

Notes: Music Department performance opportunities are open to all students regardless of major.

The Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
