Physical Science (Chemistry/Physics) Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure)

This major is designed for secondary teaching in physics and chemistry (Minnesota only). It is a combined Physics and Chemistry curriculum and is crosslisted under Chemistry. Professional education courses are also required. See Professional Education in this catalog for Teacher Licensure entry requirements and degree completion requirements. Students who wish to teach in another state should consult a Physics or Chemistry advisor very early, since the requirements for that state may differ substantially from those presented here.

Note: With proper student planning and in consultation with the Chemistry or Physics academic advisor a student may complete his or her academic degree in 128 semester credits. It is possible, in some circumstances, that courses in a student's Liberal Education program may be used in his or her academic major.

Alert: New State of Minnesota teacher licensure rules may go into effect Fall 1998. Before registering for classes, please consult the revised Handbook for Teacher Education Students, available in the office of the Department of Education.

I. Required Courses in Physics

Note: Students who complete the PHYS 1101, PHYS 1102 sequence (instead of the PHYS 2101, PHYS 2102 sequence) prior to choosing this major should consult a Physics advisor to discuss appropriate options.

PHYS 2101 Physics I (5 credits)
PHYS 2102 Physics II (5 credits)
PHYS 2150 Practical Electronics (3 credits)
PHYS 3600 Modern Physics (4 credits)

II. Required Electives in Physics

Select 10 credits of electives from Physics with consent of advisor.

III. Required Courses in Chemistry

Note: Students enrolled in CHEM 1111 who elect this major should enroll in CHEM 1212 during the second semester. Students completing the CHEM 1111, CHEM 1112 sequence before making the decision to major in Chemistry, should take CHEM 1113 before enrolling in CHEM 2510.

Note: Entry into MATH 2471 requires suitable scoring on a Math Placement Exam. Students needing a review of algebra and trigonometry will need to modify their Physics timetable, and may not complete the program in four years. See your advisor for alternative schedules.
