The Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association established a scholarship fund for students pursuing a career in the law enforcement field. These scholarships are available for students who are in the peace officer standards and training skills program, in their second year of a two-year law enforcement program or in their third or fourth year of studying criminal justice at a four-year university.
Applicants must include a student narrative, a statement of need, three references and a letter of recommendation.
“I had to answer essay questions on my strongest and weakest personal characteristics, my interest in law enforcement, how I make decisions that impact the lives of others around me and why I applied for the scholarship,” Beste said of the application process. “Then I met with Sheriff Hodapp of Beltrami County and he wrote a letter of recommendation for me and submitted my application.”
As a student at Bemidji State Beste is dedicated to his education and future goals, which lead him to apply for this scholarship. He also stood out to BSU faculty by being committed to his courses and objectives.
“Andrew is one of those students every faculty member hopes to have in their class. He is a great student, fully engaged, participatory and demonstrates wonderful leadership qualities in and out of the classroom,” Dr. Janet Heuer, associate professor of criminal justice, said. “He is very deserving of this scholarship.”
Beste will graduate in the spring of 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in law enforcement and a minor in psychology. He will then complete an internship and apply for a position in law enforcement with the goal of getting a position at the federal level.
“While attending school at BSU, I also worked with the Department of Public Safety on campus. The classes I have taken and the training I have received through my job have enabled me to better understand my role as a law enforcement officer,” Beste said. “The guidance and mentoring I have received from Dr. Heuer and Dr. Herbert have shown me the importance of education and have provided me with a great foundation with the hopes of becoming a great law enforcement officer.”
