Dr. Meijer is new to the Bemidji School of Nursing and Bemidji State University and comes with 14 year of baccalaureate nursing education experience. Earning her doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, she received the 2009-2010 Minnesota Hartford Scholar award while studying.  She earned her Master’s degree in Higher Education and perinatal nursing from the UMN, her BSN degree from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN and her Diploma in Nursing from SBGH in Winnipeg, MB in Canada. Denise is a board certified nurse practitioner in Women’s Health. Her passions are international nursing education and transcultural perinatal and women’s health care across the lifespan in the acute care and community health settings.

Born in the Netherlands, Dr. Meijer moved to Canada where she studied and initially practiced nursing in PACU and acute medical/ surgical care. Early in her career she defined her practice area in labor and delivery and perinatal care of mother and baby where she worked with diverse populations. After moving to the US, she worked in Morrison County Public Health as a public health nurse in the Maternal Child Infant (MCH) department and was PHN Case Manager for sick children and their families. She returned to acute perinatal and L&D care until earning her Master’s degree and started teaching nursing at a central Minnesota college. Throughout her teaching career, Dr. Meijer was Director for long and short term study abroad nursing programs, and believes that student learning experiences with people from different cultures informs and opens the mind for creative and mindful nursing practice.
