Testing Requirements

The Professional Education Department and PEDL understand testing centers are currently closed due to COVID-19 and NES Basic Skills testing is currently unavailable. If you meet all other admission requirements the we will review your application and may grant you Conditional Admittance. You will be allowed to register for fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021 coursework but will be blocked from registering for fall 2021 courses; the block will be lifted when exams are completed. As soon as the testing centers reopen,  take the NES Basic Skills (Reading, Writing and Math) tests and forward the receipts (showing you took the tests) to Mirlande: Dlite@bemidjistate.edu Evidence should be provided as soon as possible, with an absolute deadline of May 15, 2021.

Minnesota requires a series of exams for initial teacher licensure. Students must complete the Basic Skills requirement prior to admission to an Education program. This requirement can be met in one of the following ways:

Option 1: Upload official score reports or receipts showing you have TAKEN the Minnesota NES Reading, Writing, and Math exams with your online application for admission.

Option 2: Students may be exempt from the NES exam if they meet one of the other accepted test score combinations found on the Board of Teaching Licensure Exams website:

http://mn.gov/board-of-teaching/beaneducator/licensureexams/

*The NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS) includes a “Technology Literacy” sub-test, which is NOT required for Minnesota candidates.

Register for the NES Essential Academic Skills  (Reading, Writing, and Math) tests HERE.

Students are not required to pass the Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills Reading, Writing and Math exams for admission to DLiTE. However, all tests must be passed to receive a 5 year Full Professional teaching license in Minnesota.

If you are using one of the other testing options found on the BOT website (i.e.: ACT, SAT, GRE, etc.) you MUST have passing scores to be exempt from the Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills exams.
