Testing Requirements

Minnesota requires a series of licensure exams for initial teacher licensure. Students must complete the Basic Skills requirement prior to admission to an Education program. This requirement can be met in one of two ways:

There are several ways to meet the Basic Skills Requirement. The most common include:

Option 1: You may meet the Basic Skills requirement by uploading an official ACT score report with your online application for admission. You will need the following combination of scores to use this option:

  • ACT Composite with Writing ≥ 22 AND Combined English/Writing ≥ 21
    The Combined English/Writing score may also be listed as English Language Arts – ELA.

Option 2: You may meet the Basic Skills requirement by uploading an official SAT score report with your online application for admission. You will need with the following combination of scores to use this option:

  • SAT Reading ≥ 510  Writing ≥ 510  Math ≥ 520

Option 3:You may meet the Basic Skills requirement by presenting proof of having taken the Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills (Reading, Writing and Math*). You will receive receipts when you have completed the tests, please include these receipts with your online application. Students are not required to pass the NES EAS Reading, Writing and Math exams for admission to Education. However, all tests must be passed to receive a 5 year Full Professional teaching license in Minnesota.

Additional licensure exams for Pedagogy and Content are required for licensure in Minnesota. Please see the Advising Coordinator, Aspen Easterling, prior to graduation to ensure you have completed all required exams.

If you are using one of the other testing options found on the BOT website (i.e.: ACT, SAT, GRE, etc.) you MUST have passing scores to be exempt from the Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills exams.
