Master of music education students will:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Arrive in the summer for a 4-week residency in Bemidji. You’ll live in Linden Hall with your cohort or commute to campus if you reside nearby. Much of your coursework will be hands-on — demonstration lessons, conducting, audiation exercises, group work — designed to improve your skills as a highly prepared practitioner.<\/li>\n
- Between your second and third summer session, and during the academic year, you’ll enroll in two private lesson courses with your faculty adviser to cover topics such as instrumental, vocal, arranging, conducting or composition.<\/li>\n
- In your third and final year, those who are completing capstone projects will share final projects, theses or recitals with the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

\nAdmission Policies and Requirements<\/h2>\n
The program launched its first cohort in Summer 2023.<\/p>\n
Applications for admission to the Master of Music Education program are submitted through and forwarded by the BSU Office of Graduate Studies if the student meets their qualifications. The Music Department reviews forwarded applications against the following program-specific criteria:<\/p>\n
Minimum Requirements:<\/b><\/p>\n

- A completed undergraduate degree in Music (or equivalent, as determined by department review) from a regionally accredited institution<\/li>\n
- Proficiency in at least one instrument or voice part<\/li>\n
- \n
A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Application Materials:<\/b>

Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Letter of intent describing the applicant’s professional background, goals for graduate study, and area(s) of interest within music education<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Review Process:<\/b>
\nApplications meeting these minimum requirements are reviewed by the Music Department faculty to assess the applicant’s potential for success in graduate-level study. Because applicants come to the program with varied undergraduate backgrounds, performance areas, and professional interests (e.g., K-12 teaching experience, or private studio instruction), the department considers the full range of an applicant’s academic record, prior training, and stated goals when evaluating fit with the MME program’s purpose and objectives.<\/p>\nAdmission decisions balance the need for standards sufficient to predict graduate success with the flexibility to admit qualified students pursuing different functions of graduate study within music education.<\/p>\n
Basic Music Competencies:<\/b><\/p>\n
Applicants admitted to the MME program must demonstrate baccalaureate-level competence in areas common to undergraduate music study, ensuring readiness for graduate-level work in music education. This is documented through:<\/div>\n- \n
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in Music (per the minimum requirements above), which is presumed to establish baseline competencies in music theory, music history, and applied performance<\/li>\n
- \nReview of undergraduate transcripts to confirm coursework in core areas (theory, aural skills, music history\/literature, and applied study)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

Applicants who do not meet these parameters may be admitted provisionally, but must complete the corresponding courses they are missing in the undergraduate sequence.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nAudition and Examination Design:<\/b>
\nEntrance requirements for the MME program are assessed through an entrance interview with the Program Director and a Musicianship entrance exam. The interview is designed to assess the applicant’s current level of teaching background, and readiness for graduate-level study in music education.
