Course description: Genomics is the study of the structure, organization, evolution, and conservation of whole genomes - because the unprecedented volume and complexity of data produced by modern genomics the discipline of bioinformatics has arisen to create methods and tools for the organization and analysis of genomic data including genome annotation, variant discovery, metagenomics, gene expression profiling, and more. This hands-on course will meet twice a week for 90 minutes to gain firsthand experience of the applications of bioinformatics and computational biology to the understanding of genome organization, gene function, and evolution. Students will learn to use the Galaxy genome toolkit to analyze disease-associated genome variants, RNA expression data, and microbiome data. Students will also use genome browser software to analyze and annotate raw genome sequence, including searching for and identifying most likely homologs, identifying transcriptional and translational start sites and intron/exon boundaries, and depositing processed sequence annotations in genome databases. Students who complete a package of sequence annotations will qualify as authors on research publications through the Genomics Education Partnership, a national undergraduate research collaborative.

This uniquely designed transcultural nursing course has two phases. Spring semester includes 3 credits of preparatory work. An additional summer semester of 1 credit consists of the international cultural immersion experiential travel May 13th - 31st.
