Registration for the Perch Pollutant Study

2022 Perch Pollutant Study

Study Description: As the human population increases, we emit more and more pollution into the environment. One impact of increased pollution is the presence of compounds that mimic natural hormones in surface waters. This has been most readily noticed downstream of wastewater treatment plants. For several years, students at Bemidji State University have analyzed perch living in these waters to see if these compounds are having an effect on perch. Specifically, they have analyzed perch livers for the impacts of these compounds. In Lake Bemidji, male perch are producing more egg protein than female perch. Needless to say, this is not good for our fisheries. With your help, we hope to expand this study to cover a larger portion of Minnesota.
