Federal CARES act funding available for Bemidji State University students

Financial assistance is available for Bemidji State University students who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In late March, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act was passed to provide economic relief to individuals and organizations dealing with the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic. Within this legislation, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund was established for colleges and universities in the United States.

On April 20, BSU signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement to receive $1,406,649 in HEERF funding for the purpose of providing emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus.

To be eligible, students cannot have dropped, withdrawn or had a last day of attendance before March 6. They also need to be enrolled in courses that were in-person, credit-earning, semester-based and continued after March 9.

Eligible students received payments on May 6 and 7. Students who fit the criteria received $340, and students who fit the criteria and also received a Federal Pell Grant received an additional CARES Supplemental Award of $285.

Students can request additional awards through the special circumstances grant application.
