BSU Music Professor Commissions Custom Piece to Elevate Women Composers

Bemidji State University’s Dr. Miriam Webber, assistant professor of music, will continue the 2020-2021 Honors Lecture Series with a lecture titled “Silent Voices: Women Composers in Their Own Words.”

In her lecture, Webber and her colleague, Sarah Lee, second bassoon of Pennyslvania’s Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, will discuss their efforts to uplift the work of female composers in the industry through their “Silent Voices” project. There will also be a performance of a commissioned piece written by a West coast composer, Lisa Neher, who will join the discussion to offer her perspective and creative process. The lecture will be held on April 28 at 6 p.m. over Zoom.

The Honors Council Lecture Series is hosted by the Bemidji State Honors Council, the advisory group to BSU’s honors program. It is composed of 12 faculty members representing each of the university’s colleges. Student representatives are also elected to the council by their cohorts for one-year terms. All lectures are open free to the public.
