Annual “Remember When” dances scheduled for two fall evenings

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The 30th Annual Remember When Dances on Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, will take music lovers and dancers back to the Big Band Era in two music-filled evenings presented by Bemidji State University jazz groups.

The dances will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight each night at the Jammers Blue Note Ballroom, north of Bemidji on Bemidji Road NE, also known as Old Highway 71.

Entertaining throughout both evenings will be approximately 35 musicians and vocalists, mostly students from the BSU Department of Music.

Music will include actual charts that the big bands played, including standards by Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Count Basie. In addition to the Big Band classics, the musicians will perform other dance favorites such as ballads, cha chas and mambos. Several vocalists will also perform music from the swing era.

Dr. Darrin Oehlerking, director of bands at Bemidji State, will direct BSU Jazz I while Craig Haugen, BSU adjunct professor of music, will direct BSU Jazz II for the dances.

Admission for each evening is $7 for the general public, $5 for senior citizens and free for BSU students with a valid ID. Tickets will be available at the door.

Proceeds from the event support the Joe Plumer Jazz Scholarship, tours and the purchase of new music for the groups.
