Bemidji Jazz Quartet and guitarist Kevin Daley present Feb. 28 concert at Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji Jazz Quartet, along with jazz guitarist Kevin Daley, will present a 7:30 p.m. concert, Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex at Bemidji State University. Admission is free of charge.

In addition, the quartet will offer a free evening of jazz from 7-11 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, at Brigid’s Cross in downtown Bemidji.

Members of the Bemidji Jazz Quartet are: Dr. Steve Konecne, professor of instrumental music, on woodwinds; Dr. Patrick Riley, professor of music, on bass; Greg Gaston, adjunct faculty of music, on drums; and Daley, as guest artist, on guitar,

Daley, a Bemidji native and graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, is a recipient of the Minnesota Music Award for top jazz-fusion guitarist. He has worked in a variety of styles and venues ranging from Broadway shows at the Ordway to performances with the New Music Theatre Ensemble and Zeitgeist. He is an instructor of guitar at the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul.

The Bemidji Jazz Quartet, founded as a BSU faculty ensemble, has appeared annually at the summer “Art Fair at the Winery” hosted by the Forestedge Winery in LaPorte. The group also has performed with a variety of notable guest artists over the years including jazz trumpeters Bobby Shew and Alan Vizzutti, among others.

In a third appearance this year, the ensemble will accompany Sean Jones, lead trumpeter with Wynton Marsalis in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, in a special concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 5, in the Thompson Recital Hall. Tickets for that concert are $20 for the general public and $5 kids. Tickets are available from the BSU Department of Music and Lueken’s Village North.
