BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University’s 2009 Summer MusiCamp is accepting applications from young band and jazz instrumentalists and pianists interested in a one-week, on-campus program of intensive music enrichment the week of July 12-18.
Instruction is open to students in grades 7-12, including those who graduate this spring. Students may choose to attend either as day students or on a residential basis. A discount is available for registrations completed before Friday, May 1.
The historic MusiCamp, now in its 62nd year, offers a variety of music instruction including lessons, theory classes, group ensemble, lecture-demonstrations and concerts, all under the direction of professional performers and instructors. Private lessons and master classes with camp faculty and guest clinicians may also be arranged. In addition, students may participate in a selection of outdoor activities on the shores of Lake Bemidji. Each session will conclude with a final concert open to the public.
Band Camp
Dr. Del Lyren, BSU professor of instrumental music, will direct the band camp, focusing on jazz and band performance. Joining him will be special guest artist, composer and conductor Sam Hazo, director of the MusiCamp Wind Ensemble. Hazo has written original symphonic compositions for actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley and symphonic arrangements for three-time Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Lucinda Williams. His works have been performed and recorded worldwide and aired in full-length programs by National Public Radio. He has been a music teacher at every education level from kindergarten through college and is currently a guest conductor and clinician for Hall Leonard Corporation.
Piano Camp
Dr. Stephen Carlson, Bemidji State assistant professor of music and piano, is directing the piano camp. Participants will receive several private lessons throughout the week, as well as play piano duets and attend sessions on music theory, style, and piano technique. The camp will culminate with the Piano Camp Recital on Saturday, July 18.

The camp instructional fee per registrant for musical and recreational activities is $240 for one week, which includes a non-refundable $100 deposit to be made at the time of registration. Early registration is $195 for those registering before Friday, May 1. The room and board fee for students residing on campus is an additional $175 per week.
Camp history
MusiCamp started in 1948 as an outreach program to provide students with all levels of ability an opportunity to study music with outstanding faculty and guest artists. Attending the first camp were 97 high school and college students. Now, 62 years later, Bemidji State faculty and staff remain committed to the Summer MusiCamp tradition.
