BSU Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference set for April 7

BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 31, 2010) — Bemidji State University’s 11th Annual Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference will showcase the varied works of nearly 200 students during presentations, performances, exhibits and poster sessions on Wednesday, April 7.

The conference begins with an 8:15 a.m. continental breakfast in room 100 of Memorial Hall, leading into an 8:40 a.m. opening ceremony featuring a keynote address by Brent Turvey, senior partner at Forensic Solutions, LLC, entitled “Forensic Criminology: Education, Ethics, and Careers.”

Turvey has participated as a forensic scientist and criminal profiler in the investigative or trial phase for both law enforcement and attorney clients around the world. The greatest volume of his casework has focused on the examination and interpretation of physical and behavioral evidence relating to cases such as assault, domestic, sexual and serial homicide and staged crime scenes.

Turvey is the author of “Criminal Profiling: An Introduction to Behavioral Evidence Analysis” and co-author of four other books on investigation, crime reconstruction and forensics. He is also an adjunct professor of justice studies at Oklahoma City University.

Following the address, student presentations and performances will be held from 10:30-11:50 a.m. and 1-2:20 p.m. in Bridgeman Hall and Hagg-Sauer Hall. These will see more than 110 students make more than 80 presentations on a vast array of topics, including the importance of public relations to the Minnesota Twins; the effects of UV-B light on tomatoes; an internist’s exploration of justice at the ACLU; student usage of social media to communicate about alcohol; and a study of female suicide terrorists in Sri Lanka.

Poster sessions, which enable participants to explain their work in a display setting, will be held in Bridgeman Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with students at the posters from 11:55 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. A total of 22 displays will represent the work of 50 students on a diversity of topics ranging from gender and substance abuse to groundwater flow into Little Turtle Lake to tax benefits for education.

From 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., three art galleries on the Bemidji State campus will also be open with exhibits supporting the conference. The Talley Gallery, located in the Education Art Building, will feature its annual Student Scholarship Show; the Touché Gallerie will feature a senior exhibit by David Baumrucker, and Gallery X features an exhibit of sculptures by students of Linda Brown, assistant professor of visual arts.
