Upcoming events at the Outdoor Program Center

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Nov. 19, 2010) — Fall activities at Bemidji State University’s acclaimed Outdoor Program Center wrap up with a variety of events in late November and early December. Upcoming activities include a kayak safety course, climbing courses and ski waxing clinics.

Nov. 23 – Kayak Safety Course
The kayak safety course runs from 7-10 p.m. and is necessary to rent a kayak from the OPC. It is aimed at those who have never kayaked before and those who want basic safety instruction. Instructors will cover capsizing and self-rescue techniques.

Attendees should bring a swimsuit and towel, and nose plugs and goggles are recommended. The OPC will provide kayaks. Pre-registration is required. The class costs $15 and payment is required at registration.

Dec. 1 – Ski/Snowboard Waxing
Using a few simple tools to get great results, OPC staff will teach participants how to tune and wax their own skiiing and snowboarding equipment. Students will learn how to sharpen edges, do base prep and repairs and how to hot-wax equipment using the correct glide wax. Participants are asked to bring their own equipment and whatever tools or wax kits they  have on hand.

The clinic will be held at the OPC’s Diamond Point Park boathouse from 6-8 p.m. and will be offered free of charge.

Dec. 2 – Introduction to Lead Climbing
Lead climbing is a critical step in a novice climber’s development, and OPC instructors will be available to provide a wealth of knowledge on the art of leading. Students will learn how to minimize falls, adapt strategy to a route and offer tips and tricks for keeping a climb organized and under control. Previous climbing experience is required, and participants must be belay certified prior to taking this clinic.

The OPC will provide all equipment for the lead climbing clinic, which is offered free of charge. The clinic will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the rock climibing wall at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center on the BSU campus. Space is limited; interested participants are encouraged to call ahead and reserve a spot.

Dec. 2 – Cross-Country Ski Waxing
Waxing cross-country skiis for grip and glide doesn’t have to be confusing. The OPC staff will be on hand to demystify the process of base preparations, choosing and applying a wax and finishing for the ideal glide. Participants will also learn the essential features of a basic wax kit, and will learn how that kit can be used to save money during a winter ski season.

The clinic is targeted at new skiiers and for recreational skiiers looking to take home some basic ski-waxing skills. Participants are asked to bring their own equipment and whatever tools or wax kits they  have on hand. The clinic will be held at the OPC’s Diamond Point Park boathouse from 6-8 p.m. and has a charge of $10.
