April 24 open house set for Glas Scholars House

BEMIDJI, Minn. (April 16, 2012) — The BSU Foundation will officially dedicate  Bemidji State University’s Glas Scholars House during an open house on Tuesday, April 24, from 3-5 p.m..

Bemidji State University Glas Scholars House

The Glas House was built in 1941 as the home of John and Elfrida “Elfy” Glas and their sons John “Boysen,” Robert, and Richard. Located at 1609 Birch Lane NE, the home was built in 1941 and was the first home constructed on its block. (share this photo of the Glas House on Pinterest)

The Glas family was a fixture in Bemidji for decades, and John Glas held a variety of leadership and administrative roles in a 36-year career at Bemidji State. He was assistant to the president and vice president for academic affairs and, from 1967-68, he served as the university’s acting president. Bemidji State’s John S. Glas Fieldhouse, the home of Beaver hockey from 1967-2010, was renamed in his honor on Oct. 1, 1975.

Elfy Glas donated the home to Bemidji State after moving closer to her sons and no longer having a use for it. The Glas family set no boundaries on the University’s use of the home. Bemidji State will use the Glas House as a residence for visiting scholars.

Refreshments will be available following a brief dedication ceremony. BSU Foundation staff will be on hand with information about the house and its role as a visiting scholars residence.
