Center for Research and Innovation events for Nov. 3-4, 2009

BEMIDJI, Minn. (October 22, 2009) — Upcoming events at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation include an Academy of Lifelong Learning presentation on ethical decision making and a 36-hour course for boiler operators at steam plants.

Academy of Lifelong Learning lecture, “Ethical Decision Making: A Philosophical View”
Dr. Kit Christensen, professor of philosophy at Bemidji State, will explain the basic factors that go into making a rational, informed decision about moral right and wrong in particular circumstances and some of the philosophical controversies surrounding those decisions. From everyday interpersonal interaction to social policy analysis affecting millions, these factors can be seen as the foundation of justified ethical beliefs. Christensen will also explain why ethical decision-making matters in our lives.

Steam Plant Engineering
This 36-hour course is designed to prepare the boiler operator or those preparing for employment as a boiler operator to take either the Minnesota Low Pressure (C Level) or Minnesota High Pressure (Levels A and B) Boiler Exam for the following classes: special engineer, second-class engineer, first-class engineer or chief engineer. For low-pressure boilers, the course content covers valves, steam traps, pumps, flame safeguards, burners, safety valves, boiler room safety and hot water boilers. The high-pressure boilers courses include coverage of condensers, steam engines, mathematical formulas, boiler room safety and hot water boilers.

Date: course begins Nov. 4 and comprises nine classes through Dec. 5, 2009. See Web site for complete list of dates.
Time: 5-9 p.m. for weekday sessions; 8 a.m. – noon for Saturday sessions.
Location: Northwest Technical College, room 130.
Tuition: $400, includes books.
