The Möbius strip has only one side and only one edge, and can be made using a strip of paper by gluing the two ends together with a half-twist, resulting in a continuous loop.

Moeller, a senior in mathematics from Palm Desert, Calif., presented a statistical analysis of deer sightings during hunting seasons.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, is attended by both students and faculty from surrounding colleges and universities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota. A total of 30 students presented their undergraduate research from 6:30-8 p.m. April 12, and from 9 a.m. to noon, April 13, at St. Johns’ Peter Engel Science Center.

Annalisa Crannell, a professor of mathematics at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., was the conference’s featured speaker. She gave two presentations about the mathematics behind perspective paintings and the relationship between projective geometry and perspective art.

Pi Mu Epsilon is a national mathematics honor society that promotes scholarly activity in mathematics among academic institutions and recognizes students’ mathematical achievements.

For more information, please call the Bemidji State University Mathematics Department at (218) 755-2880.

Bemidji State University conference participants and attendees are listed below by hometown.

MINNESOTA
Bemidji | 56601 | Iva Bilanovich, senior, mathematics
Arlington | 55307 | Vicki Riebe, sophomore, mathematics education, business administration
Delano | 55328 | Kent Bartels, senior, mathematics
Hamel | 55340 | Erin Waytas, freshman, mathematics education
Marcell | 56657 | Charles Huju, senior, mathematics education
New York Mills | 56567 | Janessa Hofland, senior, mathematics
Perham | 56573 | Leah Restad, junior, mathematics education
Plymouth | 55442 | Dan Dexter, senior, computer science, mathematics
Shakopee | 55379 | Gilbert Penaherrera, sophomore, mathematics
Worthington | 56187 | Michelle Rohrer, senior, mathematics

CALIFORNIA
Palm Desert | 92211 | Larry Moeller, senior, mathematics

KANSAS
Lenexa | 66216 | Amanda Boring, senior, mathematics education, music

NEPAL
Kathmandu | Tenzin Bajracharya, junior, mathematics

Thirteen Bemidji State University students attended the 34th annual Pi Mu Epsilon conference April 12-13 at St. John’s University in St. Cloud, Minn.
