MALMO, Sweden — Bemidji State junior forward Stephanie Anderson scored her first international point as a member of the US National Women’s hockey team Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

She also became the first Beaver women’s hockey player to win a gold medal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Team USA claimed its fifth International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship in six years with a 7-5 victory over rival Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anderson, from North St. Paul, had an assist on the game’s first goal in the opening period. Wisconsin’s Annie Pankowski went to the net after a shot by Anderson and wristed the puck past Canada’s Ann-Renee Desbiens for the 1-0 lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Team USA had a 4-2 lead after one period and led 5-2 after an early second period goal, but Canada tied it up 5-5 with three straight.<\/span><\/p>\n

The teams went into the second intermission tied at 5-5 but Brianna Decker scored the game-winner for the Americans at 11:42. Kendall Coyne added some insurance later for the final 7-5 score.<\/span><\/p>\n

Team USA was 3-for-5 on the power play and outshot Canada 36-27. Fourteen different players scored points for the Americans, who went undefeated in the tournament and outscored their opponents 37-11 over the five games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finland beat Russia 4-1 for the bronze medal. The 2016 women’s world championship will be held in Kamloops, British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
