{"id":25297,"date":"2016-08-29T16:04:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T21:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/?p=25297"},"modified":"2016-08-29T16:04:47","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T21:04:47","slug":"bsu-holds-9th-annual-day-of-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2016\/08\/29\/bsu-holds-9th-annual-day-of-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Lakeland PTV: BSU Holds 9th Annual Day of Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bemidji State University&rsquo;s American Indian Resource Center will hold the 9<\/span><span class=\"s2\">th<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Annual Day of Welcome tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Starting at 9 A-M, the center will host a pipe ceremony, drum honor song by local group the Kingbird Singers, and Native American flute music and hoop dancing by Kevin Locke. After the opening ceremony, there will be a student services information students for the university&rsquo;s offices and student organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&ldquo;It just gives our students, native and non-native alike, the opportunity to experience something and to start the year off in a good way,&rdquo; says Bill Blackwell Jr., executive director of the AIRC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&ldquo;Kind of the idea is that we want our American Indian students to really see what the campus has to offer them,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;They want to see what kind of support is there for them as well.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The event will run the entire day, ending at 7 P-M with a final performance by Kevin Locke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blackwell says about 4% of the BSU student population self-identifies as American Indian.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bemidji State University&rsquo;s American Indian Resource Center will hold the 9th Annual Day of Welcome tomorrow.
