{"id":29930,"date":"2017-10-05T15:06:50","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T20:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/?p=29930"},"modified":"2017-10-16T15:55:20","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T20:55:20","slug":"chelsey-jourdain-council-of-indian-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/05\/chelsey-jourdain-council-of-indian-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Chelsey Jourdain \u2014 Council of Indian Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29931 size-full img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" data-bp=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488.jpg 6000w, https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/10\/DSC_0488-226x151.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6000px) 100vw, 6000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chelsey Jourdain<\/strong>, an elementary education major from Bemidji, Minn., is president of BSU&rsquo;s Council of Indian Students.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 1rem;\">Jourdain was inspired to get involved by her grandfather, Roger Jourdain, who served as the chairman of the Red Lake tribal council for more than 30 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 1rem;\">&ldquo;His legacy motivated me to also have a similar leadership experience at a smaller level with the Council of Indian students here at Bemidji State,&rdquo; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Jourdain enjoys helping and guiding people to achieve their goals, fundraising and organizing events, especially the university&rsquo;s annual powwow &mdash; which will celebrate its 45th anniversary on Nov. 18.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We host the powwow each year and it is the largest community event at Bemidji State,&rdquo; Jourdain said.<\/p>\n<p>The council will also help host the American Indian Resource Center&rsquo;s Sioux Chef fundraiser on Oct. 13 and its annual Feast for the Homeless in early November.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;At the feast, we give care packages as just a little extra help to people in need, and represent Bemidji State and our community in a positive way,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 1rem;\">The council meets every Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the American Indian Resource Center conference room.
