BEMIDJI, Minn. (Jan. 7, 2010)<\/strong> — Upcoming events sponsored by the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation include a course for small business owners on branding and marketing, a lecture on how global climate change is affecting forest management and an on-line course on the basics of successful grant writing.<\/p>\n

All events are held at the Center for Research and Innovation, 3801 Bemidji Ave. N., Bemidji, unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n

Course: “Branding Your Small Business”<\/strong>
\n Presenter: Dr. Dave Smith, assistant professor of business administration, Bemidji State University
\n To succeed in today’s world, small businesses must promote the product and services that they offer in a cost-effective manner. In “Branding Your Small Business,” the third of six classes offered in a series co-sponsored by the center and the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce, course participants will learn practical marketing techniques and strategies for increasing the effectiveness of marketing dollars.<\/p>\n

Date: Wednesday, Jan. 20
\n Time: 8-10 a.m.

Natural Resources Consortium: “Forest Management and Global Climate Change”<\/strong>
\n Presenter: John Bradford, research ecologist, U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service
\n Bradford examines past observations and future predictions of climate change and discusses mechanisms behind those changes. In addition, he will address how climate change may impact forest ecosystems and what those changes may mean for forest management.<\/p>\n

Date: Monday, Jan. 25
\n Time: 3-4 p.m.
\n Registration: free<\/p>\n

On-line course: “Grant Writing”<\/strong>
\n Presenter: Nate Dorr, analyst, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development
\n This course guides participants through the process of developing a successful grant proposal, from the letter of intent to letters of support, focusing on the Common Grant Application accepted by most foundations and giving organizations. The course will also provide an overview of federal grant formats. Participants will develop a five- to seven-page grant during the course.<\/p>\n

Date: course begins Monday, Jan. 25; runs through Saturday, March 14.
