With Treuer at the helm as managing editor, sixteen Ojibwe speakers teamed up with linguists, teachers and Ojibwe language experts to create five books presented entirely in Ojibwe.<\/p>\n<p>The book series is published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/collections\/browse-mnhs-press-titles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Minnesota Historical Society Press<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a> and includes the following titles for a range of reading levels.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/ge-ni-aabadak-giniigaaniiminaang?_pos=1&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ge-ni-aabadak Giniigaaniiminaang<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&rdquo;, which translates to English as &ldquo;What we Shall Make Use of in Our Future,&rdquo; is a collection of fictional short stories told by elders from the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and intended for younger readers of Ojibwe.<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/akawe-niwii-tibaajim?_pos=6&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Akawe niwii-tibaajim<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>,&rdquo; &ldquo;First of All, I&rsquo;m Telling a Story&rdquo; in English, details experiences and memories of Mille Lacs Ojibwe elders on topics such as the Ojibwe naming ceremony and the deeper meanings in wild rice harvest.<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/anooj-inaajimod?_pos=5&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Anooj Inaajimod<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&rdquo;, which translates to &ldquo;They Tell All Kinds of Things&rdquo; in English, feature stories about getting into and out of trouble, solving problems and having funny and surprising adventures.<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/nishiimeyinaanig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nishiimeyinaanig<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&ldquo;, &ldquo;Our Little Siblings&rdquo;, contains tales about animal characters acting foolishly and bravely, showing wisdom and weakness all while having adventures.<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/gaa-pi-izhiwebak?_pos=3&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Gaa-pi-izhiwebak<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&ldquo;, &ldquo;What Happened,&rdquo; is a collection of nonfiction stories, cultural teachings and histories told elders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The books were also edited by Michael Sullivan Sr., the resident linguist for the Waadookodaading Ojibwe Language Immersion School in Wisconsin&rsquo;s Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Nation. The series was illustrated by Wesley Ballinger, a Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe artist who is also the community engagement coordinator for the American Indian Studies Department at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the book series, the Aanjibimaadizing Language Preservation Initiative is working to develop a Rosetta Stone language learning program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The language team in Mille Lacs will be developing all of the curriculum tools. It will never replace our speakers. It won&rsquo;t replace, nor will it be a silver bullet to save our language. It will be a tool in the arsenal that will help who&rsquo;s alive speaking Ojibwe right now to teach people for hundreds of years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Treuer also has two additional books written entirely in Ojibwe available for pre-order now. &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/awesiinyensag?_pos=2&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Awesiinyensag<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&rdquo; was authored by a team of twelve Ojibwe language speakers and illustrated by Ballinger while &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/naadamaading?_pos=4&amp;_sid=185e4dd1a&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Naadamaading<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>&rdquo; was authored by a team of eleven speakers and illustrated by Ojibwe artist Jonathan Thunder. Thunder is a member of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota and is a multidisciplinary artist and the illustrator of the best-selling children&rsquo;s book <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.mnhs.org\/products\/bowwow-powwow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Bowwow Powwow<\/em><i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>ABOUT DR. His book, &ldquo;Ojibwe in Minnesota,&rdquo; was named Minnesota&rsquo;s Best Read by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress in 2010. He edited &ldquo;Awesiinyensag: Dibaajimowinan Ji-gikinoo&rsquo;amaageng,&rdquo; an Ojibwe-language children&rsquo;s book that was named Minnesota&rsquo;s Best Read for 2011. And In 2012, he won the Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local History for his book, &ldquo;The Assassination of Hole in the Day.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"note\" aria-roledescription=\"Custom font color\">At BSU, Treuer teaches courses on Ojibwe language, culture, history and literature. Before joining the BSU faculty, Treuer spent four years as an assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"note\" aria-roledescription=\"Custom font color\">Treuer is a member of the Minnesota State Arts Board and has served on the boards for the White Earth Land Recovery Project and the Sanford\/MeritCare health system.
