{"id":47659,"date":"2023-04-04T08:10:54","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T13:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/?p=47659"},"modified":"2023-04-04T13:20:35","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T18:20:35","slug":"pribyl-seeks-answers-about-red-lakes-zebra-mussels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/04\/pribyl-seeks-answers-about-red-lakes-zebra-mussels\/","title":{"rendered":"Pribyl Seeks Answers About Red Lake&#8217;s Zebra Mussels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bemidji State University aquatic and wildlife biology double-major, Marissa Pribyl, recently presented prize-winning research concerning a possible link between an understudied fish species and one of Minnesota&rsquo;s most concerning aquatic invasive species.<\/p>\n<p>Red Lake, Minnesota&rsquo;s largest inland lake covering over 288,000 acres, has been infested with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/invasives\/aquaticanimals\/zebramussel\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">zebra mussel<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a> larvae since 2019, likely introduced unintentionally by boaters after hitching rides on boats brought from other infested lakes in the state. Populations of harmful adult zebra mussels are low, however, leaving many area fisheries researchers scratching their heads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47660\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47660\" style=\"width: 928px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47660 size-full img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/zebra-mussel.jpeg\" alt=\"zebra mussel\" width=\"928\" height=\"593\" data-bp=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/zebra-mussel.jpeg\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adult zebra mussel <br>Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Much more common in Red Lake are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/learn\/nature\/freshwater-drum-sheepshead-aplodinotus-grunniens.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">freshwater drum<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>, a fish species with blunt snouts, humped backs and males that grunt during breeding season to attract females. They can be found through much of North and Central America. Despite this diverse range, their diets and habits remain relatively unstudied by the fisheries community. It is known that they regularly feed on members of the mollusk family, which zebra mussels belong to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47663\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47663 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/20100208-freshwater_drum.jpg\" alt=\"freshwater drum\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" data-bp=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/20100208-freshwater_drum.jpg\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshwater drum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What keeps adult zebra mussel numbers low in Red Lake, even while they cause massive ecosystem impacts in other northern Minnesota lakes? Could the lake&rsquo;s freshwater drum be keeping zebra mussel populations in check?<\/p>\n<p>Pribyl, who is from Bemidji, was determined to find out.<\/p>\n<p>In July and October 2022, and with the help of professionals from Red Lake Nation&rsquo;s Department of Natural Resources, she examined stomach contents of 159 freshwater drum for evidence the fish had been feeding on zebra mussels. Despite strong competition from other student biologists, she won best student poster honors. Her results will be shared with Red Lake Nation Fisheries officials.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I plan to collect water chemistry data and compare the type of substrate [the material found on the lake bottom] between Upper and Lower Red Lake, which will hopefully give us a better understanding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from BSU in May, Pribyl will head to Alaska to research coho and cutthroat salmon as a fisheries technician. Applying to graduate school is also in the works for the budding fisheries researcher.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m very appreciative for my time at BSU, and am especially thankful for the amazing professors who have mentored me throughout the years. BSU will always have a special place in my heart,&rdquo; Pribyl said.<\/p>\n<h2>About Aquatic Biology<\/h2>\n<p>Bemidji State University is the only institution in Minnesota to offer a four-year degree program in aquatic biology. This program includes the study of lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, invertebrates, insects, fish, aquatic plants and more.
