{"id":48733,"date":"2024-02-23T11:44:09","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T17:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/?p=48733"},"modified":"2024-02-23T11:44:09","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T17:44:09","slug":"olson-athletics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/23\/olson-athletics\/","title":{"rendered":"Olson Leaps from Track Star to Campus Leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olivia Olson makes the most of her time at Bemidji State University by getting involved with the campus community.<\/p>\n<p>After working as a resident assistant for the Department of Housing and Residential Life as a sophomore, she was promoted to assistant resident hall director of Birch Hall where she promotes a positive environment for Oak residents and supervises the building&rsquo;s resident assistants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The residence halls have a unique community that you can&rsquo;t find off campus,&rdquo; Olson said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a wonderful experience witnessing friendships blossoming and being in an environment where we support each other.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Olson&rsquo;s family legacy in track and field at the university inspired her to attend BSU. She was inspired by her mother, Amber Olson, who attended BSU in the &rsquo;90s and competed for the women&rsquo;s track and field team. Olivia&rsquo;s love for track began in 7th grade when she started participating competitively. She gradually developed an interest in pole vaulting and found her niche in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I found my passion for the sport at a young age,&rdquo; Olson said. &ldquo;Having my mother&rsquo;s support and coaching helped me excel and reach my goals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As a student-athlete at BSU, Olson is dedicated to both her sport and her academics. As a prominent member of the team, Olivia continuously sets personal records and has had multiple first- and second-place finishes. She also excels educationally, making the Spring and Winter NSIC All-Academic Teams of Excellence and the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team her sophomore year. The environment at BSU has provided Olivia with support where she can learn and grow.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I value the tight-knit community within the BSU women&rsquo;s track team,&rdquo; Olson said. &ldquo;We actively support and encourage each other, despite it being an individual sport.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Pursuing a double major in mass communication and marketing communication, alongside her other commitments, time management is crucial for Olson.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve worked to build a routine throughout my week,&rdquo; Olson said. &ldquo;Having different commitments has taught me to be flexible and has helped me make the most of my time here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Olson&rsquo;s journey as a student-athlete at Bemidji State University is a testament to her diligence and leadership.
