(Oct. 28, 2011) — The honors program at Bemidji State University is a team-teaching setting in which faculty and students work together to share insights and examine perspectives to gain new understandings and interests, engage in dialog on multiple points of view, analyze ideas critically, and practice creative and unconventional thinking.

The honors program strives to challenge, motivate and support students to put forth their best efforts in pursuit of their undergraduate study, and to enrich their university experience through active learning and engagement with the academic experience.

Incoming freshmen with an ACT score of 26 or higher or who rank in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes are invited to join the honors program. Students already enrolled at BSU may be recommended to the program by an individual faculty member or may be invited during the second semester of their freshman year based on their academic performance during the first semester. Each student who chooses to accept admission into the honors program becomes a member of a cadre of students who are offered ongoing support through the honors faculty, staff and director.

As an alternative liberal education program, Bemidji State’s honors program offers students the opportunity to engage in and develop an appreciation of multiple perspectives and to dialog with faculty from a variety of academic disciplines and other students on contrasting viewpoints of issues. Students take one honors course each semester of their freshman and sophomore years and one integrative seminar class in either their junior or senior year.

Junior and senior honors students complete an honors thesis, which is the culminating academic experience. The thesis may be scholarly, based on empirical or archival research or on literary criticism whose end product is a documented paper, or creative, consisting of original work created by the student and presented in written form or in performance accompanied by a written artists statement. Each student works closely with a faculty thesis advisor of his/her choosing on a topic of their choosing. The thesis provides the student with an opportunity to research, synthesize, integrate and articulate ideas while mentored by a professional in the field.

For more information about the honors program at Bemidji State University, please contact the Honors Office at (218) 755- 3984 or email honors@bemidjistate.edu.

2011-12 HONORS PROGRAM MEMBERS

Bemidji, Minn.
Angela Bergo, junior, aquatic biology (56601)
Dacia Bessler, senior, nursing (56601)
Ida Brooks, freshman, undecided (56601)
Anthony Cole, senior, engineering technology (56601)
Rachel Munson, sophomore, history (56601)
Claire Poor-Harmon, sophomore, pre-medicine (56601)
Michaela Willer, hunior, design technology (56601)

MINNESOTA
Andover | Kara Johnson, senior, design technology (55304)
Andover | Kristen Raaen, senior, English education (55304)
Biscay
