Writing Style Guide

The Writing Style Guide, developed by the Office of Communications and Marketing, is our supplement to the Associated Press Stylebook. In cases of conflict, the entries in this guide take precedence over the AP stylebook; exceptions to AP style are typically noted in the University's guidelines.

This guide has been placed online as a service to the University. It is not meant to be the final word on style but rather a series of suggestions for campus writers and editors, particularly for writing stories or releases aimed at the news media.

Entries address style questions that arise frequently in writing about the University, as well as campus-specific issues such as building and place names and proper reference to various University entities.
