Welcome to campus students, staff, faculty, and visitors. I want to encourage each of you to take your part in being a change for the betterment of all. It is imperative that we engage in transformative and sustainable work as it pertains to eliminating racism and oppressive systems. These systems promote racism, disparities, and inequities. Part of this work belongs to the educational system. As we move through time, we must continue to educate and practice in an inclusive and intentional manner that promotes unity. Embracing unity does not erase the true harms that are being done to underrepresented and underserved persons. We must acknowledge, address, and never repeat hatred-rooted harm. 

As we plan for the future of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College, we aspire to lead the way in educating true change-agents and standing strong against injustices.  

Campus Diversity Officer’s Fiscal Year 2022 Priorities  

Priority 1: Establish an inclusive culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College. 

Priority 2: Engage employees in the following topics, diversity, equity, inclusion, racial justice, social justice, and anti-racism.

Mission Statement

To foster a safe, welcoming and inclusive campus and community culture that respects difference and ensures equitable opportunities for every person.

Vision Statement

At Bemidji State University, we celebrate and embrace diversity, and steadfastly seek to ensure equitable and inclusive environments for every person who learns, teaches, works, and visits our campus.  People are valued for their differences, and we strive to reflect that variation.  We combat injustices, demonstrate kindness and encourage every individual to seek and be true to their own identities.  We clearly demonstrate our commitment to the Ojibwe and to other Indigenous peoples in this country.

Priorities

  1. Foster and equitable, safe and respectful campus and community culture for every person who learns, teaches, works and visits our campus.
  2. Promote the value of a demographically diverse and inclusive student body and workforce.
  3. Promote opportunities for students and employees to increase their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous People’s past and present experiences and ways of knowing.
  4. Support the presence of diversity and equity in academic curriculum and classroom conversations.
  5. Encourage partnerships and collaborations among campus departments, teams and efforts focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Experiential Learning Opportunities (ELOs) consist of training, and programs (i.e., guided dialogue, and watch and chat). Each modality of ELO focuses on a critical topic involving diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, social justice, racial justice, plus (DEIA+). ELOs are meant to engage the learner, challenge and support the learner, and supply the learner with a greater capacity to interpersonally and intrapersonally reflect. ELOs are offered to faculty and staff only.

Trainings 

Understanding Social Aggression
Understanding Social Aggression training will engage learners interpersonally and intrapersonally by investigating social aggression and the impacts that it has on life within postsecondary education and beyond. This training will provide learners with foundational tools to identify, challenge, and dismantle social aggression. Through a bio-psycho-socio-cultural framework, learners will invest time in discovering and confronting symptoms of oppression through an array of modalities.

Key terms: micro-aggression, micro-insult, macro-invalidation, micro-assault, code switching, racism, supremacy.

Programs 

Guided Dialogues 
Description:                                                                                                                                                                             Guided Dialogues are focused sessions that are tailored to the participants. Each session focuses on a critical topic within the context of social and racial justice. Guided Dialogues encourage intentional dialogue led by an experienced facilitator. Participants will be challenged and supported as they navigate thought-provoking dialogue with peers. Guided Dialogues are intended for staff, faculty, and administrators. They are offered in-person and virtually. Each session is one-hour in length. Guided Dialogues are offered throughout the academic year only. Critical topics are chosen at the time of registration.

Watch and Chat
Description: Watch and Chats are highly experiential (I.e., auditory, and visual) sessions that focus on critical topics within the context of racism and dismantling racism. This ELO is led by an experienced facilitator. Watch and Chats encourage transparent communication and interpersonal reflection. Participants will be challenged and supported throughout the ELO. Watch and Chats are intended for staff, faculty, and administrators. They are offered only in-person at this time. Each session is one-hour in length. Watch and Chats are offered throughout the academic year only. Critical topics are chosen at the time of registration.
