If symptoms, genital discharge, burning with urination, abdominal or testicular pain<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> Antibiotics, can be cured, partner may need to be treated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Condoms offer good protection, partners may need to be treated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Gonorrhea<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facts:<\/strong> Fairly common in US but not as common on college campuses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Can be silent, especially in women. If symptoms, genital discharge, painful urination, abdominal or testicular pain<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> PID, infertility, arthritis, heart problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> Antibiotics, can be cured, partners need to be treated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Condoms offer good protection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other Bacterial STIs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Spyhilis<\/li>\n<li>Chancroid<\/li>\n<li>Trichomoniasis<\/li>\n<li>Bacterial Vaginosis (not always contracted sexually)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Viral STIs Spread By Blood and Other Body Fluids<\/h2>\n<h3>HIV (Human Immunodefiency Virus) &amp; AIDS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facts:<\/strong> Increasing fastest among young people<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Most people show no symptoms for many years but can still transmit the virus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> Development of opportunistic infections and full blown AIDS, death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> No cure. Many antiviral drugs can decrease viral load in the body, stave off infections and death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Condoms offer good protection. No sharing of needles\/syringes or other body fluid to open skin\/muucus membrane contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Hepatitis B<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facts:<\/strong> Much more readily infectious than HIV<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Some people have no symptoms. If symptoms: fatigue, nausea, jaundice and dark urine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> Can become chronic carriers, can cause progressive liver disease, sometimes death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> Rest, good nutrition, symptom relief<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Vaccine preventable. If partner is infected, condoms offer some protection. No sharing of needles\/syringes or other body fluid to open skin\/muucus membrane contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other Viral STIs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>CMV (not always contracted sexually)<\/li>\n<li>Molluscum Contagiosum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Viral STIs Spread By Surface Contact<\/h2>\n<h3>Human Papilloma Virus (Genital Warts, HPV)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facts:<\/strong> Possibly the most prevalent STI on college campuses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Can be silent. If symptomatic, soft warts shaped like miniature cauliflower florets<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> Some strains cause cervical cancer in women, can cause genital cancer in males<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> No cure. There are several methods for controlling\/treating the warts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Condoms offer some protection, but uncovered skin might shed the virus even with no visible lesions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Herpes Simplex Types 1 and 2<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facts:<\/strong> Very prevalent on college campuses. Type 2 usually associated with genital herpes but type 1 can be present on genitals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Often silent. If symptomatic presents as painful blistery sores, sometimes associated with fever\/swollen glands in groin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consequences:<\/strong> Recurrent episodes, problems for babies of infected mothers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> No cure. Anti-viral medications control or decrease symptoms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> No sexual contact during active stage. Condoms offer some protection, but uncovered skin might shed the virus even with no visible lesions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other STIs<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pubic Lice<\/li>\n<li>Scabies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both can also be spread by close but not necessarily sexual contact<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bacterial STIs Spread by Body Fluids Chlamydia Facts: Fairly common on college campuses.
