Presidential Commitment

Horizons winter 2009

The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment addresses global warming by garnering institutional pledges to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions. With higher education’s involvement, the goal is to accelerate research and educational efforts to re-stabilize the earth’s climate. By signing the commitment, presidents agree to eliminate their campuses’ greenhouse gas emissions over time. This involves completing an emissions inventory, setting a two-year target date and milestones for becoming climate neutral; taking immediate short-term action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; integrating sustainability into the curriculum and overall educational experience; and making the action plan, inventory, and progress reports publicly available.

"I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have no lived."
~ Henry David Thoreau (American essayist, poet and philosopher, 1817–1862)
