The staff in the Sustainability Office are composed of passionate students with a drive to motivate the campus to think, act and be sustainable. The staff is composed of students with many different majors and backgrounds. Each person brings a different perspective to the group and with that diversity the staff has become resourceful and has gained the ability to communicate efficiently.

Erika Bailey-Johnson

  • Education:
    • BA in Biology from the U of M, Morris
    • Master's degree in Environmental Studies from BSU in 2006
  • Teaching History: Taught for two years in Mexico and three years in Kuwait with her husband before returning home in Northern Minnesota; currently teaches as an adjunct instructor for the course People and the Environment.
  • Erika has been the Sustainability Coordinator at Bemidji State University since the fall of 2008
  • She maintains an active schedule with two young boys and a passion to make this community a healthier and more sustainable place

Anna Carlson


  • B.A. Environmental Studies from University of Minnesota
  • Duluth, M.S Environmental Studies from Bemidji State University
  • Ph. D. Sustainable Energy Planning from Aalborg University, Denmark

Anna began work in the Sustainability Office in the Fall of 2014. Previously, Anna worked as an adjunct instructor at BSU having had the opportunity to teach both People and the Environment and Environmental Law and Policy. She has returned to BSU after spending 3 years abroad in Denmark studying Sustainable Energy Planning with an emphasis in wind energy integration. She is excited to share her passion for and experience in renewable energy development to help BSU further its commitment to environmental stewardship, and to work to create a resilient and sustainable Bemidji community.
