Art History is the study of particular artifacts of visual culture as ‘documents.’ A multi-disciplinary inquiry, drawing on many sources, it seeks both to understand how a work of art participates in the life of its world, and to gain through it insights into that world. With multiple means, Art History strives to “make the visible legible.”
The study of Art History complements all liberal learning since it broadens our perspective of the diversity of human experience in very tangible ways. It is an especially useful corollary to any major program in the Humanities, and may be pursued as a free-standing minor at Bemidji State University. This can contribute to graduate study and diverse career opportunities.See Section II, Enrollment for required high school preparation.
Recommended High School CoursesStudents are encouraged to discuss with their advisor the option of a second major or minor that might strengthen or complement their major.
