Humanities Major, B.A.

I. Required Courses

HUM 1100 Human Culture and Ideas (3 credits)
HUM 2100 European Culture and Civilization (3 credits)
HUM 2120 American Culture and Civilization (3 credits)
HUM 2130 Non-Western Cultures and Civilization (3 credits)
HUM 4920 Directed Group Study: Senior Seminar (3 credits)

II. Required Electives

ENGL: Complete one course from English, American, or world literature listings on the 2000 level (3 credits)
HST: Complete one course from HST 1304 World History I or HST 1305 World History II or American, European, or non-Western History listings on the 2000 level (3-4 credits)
Modern Languages: Complete a one-year course sequence in one of the following languages: German, Ojibwe, or Spanish (6-8 credits)
MUS: Complete MUS 1100 Introduction to Music or MUS 1120 Folk, Jazz, and Rock (2 credits)
PHIL: Complete either PHIL 1100 Introduction to Philosophy or any 2000 level Philosophy course (3 credits)
VSAR/ARTH: Complete VSAR 1107 Introduction to Art or ARTH 2551 Art History Survey I or ARTH 2552 Art History Survey II (2-4 credits)

A. Humanities Discipline Option

Select with the consent of advisor 12 credits of course work, mainly at the 3000 level or higher. Course work may be selected from one of the following disciplines: English, History, Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, Theatre, or Visual Arts.

B. American Studies Option

Select with consent of advisor 12 credits in courses concerned with civilization in the United States. Courses selected should include several disciplines to ensure breadth of study. Suggested courses are:

ARTH 3550 Nineteenth Century Visual Culture (4 credits)
ARTH 3557 Twentieth Century Art (4 credits)
ENGL 2350 American Literature, to 1865 (3 credits)
ENGL 2355 American Literature, 1865 to Present (3 credits)
ENGL 3609 Period Topics (3 credits): With consent of advisor when topic is appropriate.
GEOG 3410 Geography of North America (3 credits)
HST 1114 U.S. History I to 1865 (4 credits)
HST 1115 U.S. History II Since 1865 (4 credits)
HST 3177 U.S. Intellectual and Social History (3 credits)
HST 3187 American West (3 credits)
INST 3568 Survey of American Indian Art (3 credits)
MUS 3801 History and Literature of Music I (3 credits)
MUS 3802 History and Literature of Music II (3 credits)
