Developmental Electives Courses

(DEVL) College-Program 09-64. Check with Department for quarter when courses are offered. Read each course description for prerequisite.


090 English as a Second Language (ESL): ADVANCED LISTENING AND SPEAKING (3 credits). Development of listening and speaking skills for students whose native language is not English. Emphasis on analysis of spoken English for grammar, vocabulary and main ideas. Speaking tasks include role plays, interviews, pronunciation practices.

091 English as a Second Language (ESL): ADVANCED READING AND WRITING (3 credits). Development of reading and writing skills for students whose native language is not English. Emphasis on grammar, vocabulary,, and organizational patterns. Enrollment determined by score on English Proficiency Exams.

092 EDUCATIONAL PLANNING AND PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT (1 credit). To assist non-traditional students in educational program planning. Students are expected to examine previous work experience, to shape some general educational goals, and to determine an action plan. They will also learn about opportunities at and requirements of BSU. They will learn a process for having their knowledge and skills assessed for possible credit.

093 EXPLORATIONS: THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE LIFE (1 credit). "Explorations" has been created to help students make a comfortable and successful transition from high school to higher education. Course examines some of the stages students often go through as they begin college life, and focuses on avoiding common pitfalls for the new student. Note: See "Developmental Electives" in this section for application of credits toward graduation.

096 EDC STUDENT SEMINAR (1 credit). Offers a complete orientation to the university, including academic concerns, personal - social concerns, and career information and planning.

Updated: 097 LIFE CAREER PLANNING (2 credits). Centers around the American-College Testing Program's Career Planning Program (ACT CPP) test and its results. Skill and interest tests provide the student with concrete information based on his/her test results. Values clarification, on-site job exploration, guest speakers, self scored interest test, and job search skills are covered. Course helps students to consider their options, and make effective career plans.

098 SELF-EXPRESSION GROUP (2 credits). This course offers students the opportunity to practice various styles of communications and human relations theories. Focuses include self-disclosure, values clarification, cultural awareness and listening techniques.

099 ADVANCED READING SKILLS (2 credits). Emphasis is placed on advanced reading skills such as critical reading and comprehension. Materials for practice will consist of long excerpts from text books that are used across the curriculum. Two class hours and one lab hour required.
