Areas of Study

The social work profession is dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals, groups and communities. It addresses a variety of human needs in the context of complex personal and social situations and promotes the positive use of resources. Social work settings include rural communities, inner cities, suburbs, public or private social service agencies, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, groups homes and probation offices. Social work areas include chemical dependency, family counseling, adoption and foster care, youth work, mental health services and community outreach programs.

The Social Work program emphasizes an understanding of human interactions within social environments. Focus areas include research and practice methodologies, critical thinking, and legislative and government processes. Graduates of the program are prepared for entry level social work practice and for graduate study.

The Social Work curriculum is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education and graduates are therefore eligible to apply for social work licensure in Minnesota and other states. Students are also eligible for full membership in the National Association of Social Work and are accountable to the Social Work Code of Ethics.

Note: A "Social Work Student Guide" is available from the Beaver Bookstore on the BSU campus.
