Areas of Study

Theatre Dramatic performance is as old as humankind. It predates written history, arising in cultures and societies in all parts of the world. Theatre holds an integral place in society and in a liberal arts curriculum. One of the lively arts, it always occurs in the present time, regardless of what period a play portrays. Wherever and whenever theatre occurs, it attempts to communicate, entertain, and/or teach. It is evanescent, giving momentary life to scripts through the efforts of a whole range of artists: actors, directors, designers, production crews, musicians and playwrights.

The Theatre program trains students in theatrical production and appreciation of the theatre, and develops personal talent. Drawing upon a strong Liberal Education background, theatre majors prepare for careers in theatre, often in conjunction with a second major. Theatre majors and other students improve their theatrical knowledge and skills through research, study, practice and performance.

The Theatre Department is further dedicated to providing worthy theatrical productions to students, the institution and the community.

Speech Communication Effective speech communication, including formal and informal speaking, problem solving and interpersonal communication, is essential in our contemporary society. The Department is committed to training students in the concepts and skills of speech communication. Contact the Department chair for information on course options.

All students are welcome to audition for theatrical productions. They need not major or minor in theatre.

Students majoring in Theatre are urged to take a second major to improve their career and graduate study options. Theatre and Speech Communication majors are also urged to pursue at least one year of foreign language study.
