Areas of Study

Vocational education prepares people for careers in trades, industry, and related occupations. The Vocational Education program at Bemidji State University trains vocational education instructors. Vocational Education majors must have prior work experience in the field they wish to teach in, and credits may be awarded for that experience.

In Vocational Education, theories and other philosophical approaches to education are taught in the context of practical experience. For example, students who wish to teach in the construction area will already have work experience in that area. In the Vocational Education program, that experience is combined with teacher methodologies such as task analysis. Vocational Education offers degree and non-degree licensures. State of Minnesota Vocational Education licensure requires trade experience.

Notes: Students interested in teaching vocational education who do not yet have work experience may consider a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Vocational Training. See the "Industrial Technology" section in this catalog.

The Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education does not meet licensure requirements for secondary school teaching in industrial arts or business education.
