Mathematics Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure)

The Mathematics Bachelor of Science (Teacher Licensure) follows the guidelines of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics for undergraduate programs for teachers of mathematics. Students majoring in this degree should also check the Professional Education requirements found in Professional Education: Secondary.

Graduates of the program are licensed by the Minnesota Board of Teaching to teach mathematics in grades 7-12 in the State of Minnesota.

Requirements for entry into and completion of teacher licensure programs are listed under Professional Education: Admission to, Retention in, and Completion of Teacher Education Programs, this catalog. Additionally, a minor in another discipline is recommended to increase employability.

I.Transfer students must take a minimum of 15 quarter hours in the major at Bemidji State University.

II. Required Courses (Core)

Subtotal: 40 credits

*NOTE: If the student's high school mathematics courses and/or the Mathematics Placement Test indicate a lack of readiness for calculus, the student will be placed in one of the following pre-calculus sequences: MATH 145 and 146 or MATH 141 and 142, or MATH 112, 113, 114, and 141.

III. Required Professional Education Courses

Subtotal Professional Education: 50 credits

IV. Required Electives

Complete a minimum of 27 quarter hours restricted as listed below:

  1. One course (of at least 4 quarter hours) in the area of geometry (courses numbered 350's and 450's or equivalent).
  2. One additional abstract algebra course (of at least 4 quarter hours) (courses numbered 330's and 430's or equivalent).
  3. One computer science programming course chosen from CS 220, 221, 228, 261, 344.
  4. Any two of the three courses MATH 260 Applied Statistics, MATH 381 History of Mathematics, or MATH 425 Number Theory.
  5. Other electives: Select at least four credits from MATH 245, MATH 260, any above MATH 320, or above CS 300 (except CS 322).

Subtotal: 27 credits

TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR B.S. (TEACHER LICENSURE): 117 CREDITS
