Communication Course Descriptions
*Note: Students in this program should prepare their schedules in consultation with their assigned Department of Theatre and Speech Communication adviser.
Subtotal: 44-46 credits
Students must take at least 15 quarter hours of theatre electives to bring their total to 60 quarter hours. Select from the following:
- THSP 105 Advanced Stage Makeup (2 credits)
- THSP 180 20th Century Musical Theatre (3 credits)
- THSP 220 Oral Interpretation (3 credits)
- THSP 232 Voice and Diction (3 credits)
- THSP 272 Children's Theatre (4 credits)
- THSP 322 Stage Acting Styles (2 credits)
- THSP 402 Portfolio (1 credit)
- THSP 455 Advanced Direction of Plays (3 credits)
- (or alternate choices from the required core)
Subtotal: 15 credits
Courses in music, literature, and the visual arts may be acceptable. All electives must be approved in writing by the major advisor before enrolling in the course.
TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR MAJOR: 60-61 CREDITS
The following is a list of required Theatre Major, B.A. courses arranged by year. This schedule is intended to help students plan their courses in an orderly fashion; however, these are only suggestions and this schedule is flexible. Some courses are offered only on a rotating basis, not annually.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Extensive participation in departmental programs and activities is expected of majors and minors. Students failing to participate should note that departmental screening criteria for majors and minors include such participation as a significant factor for acceptance.
*NOTE: Candidates seeking teacher certification in a minor must take the Education Methods course specific to that minor. See Course Offerings under Professional Education.
Subtotal: 28-29 credits
Select five additional quarter hours from the Theatre and Speech area. Strongly recommended electives are THSP 260 Technical Theatre and THSP 104 Basic Stage Makeup. 5 credits
TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR MINOR: 33-34 CREDITS
Students in the Bachelor of Arts program should prepare their schedules in consultation with their assigned Department of Theatre and Speech Communication adviser. The program of study must be approved by the Department Chair.
Subtotal: 21 credits
Students must take 14 quarter hours to bring their total to 35 quarter hours. Students may select courses in such areas such as art, dance, or technology with approval of their Theatre and Speech Communication Adviser. 14 credits
TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR MINOR, B.A.: 35 CREDITS
The minor in theatre production is suggested for those students who may wish to prepare for extracurricular work in theatre at the secondary school level and not for students majoring in Theatre/Speech.
Subtotal: 32 credits
Complete a minimum of 3 quarter hours of course work from the following:
- THSP 370 Theatre History: Origins, Classical, and Medieval (3 credits)
- THSP 373 Theatre History: Renaissance through 18th Century (3 credits)
- THSP 375 Theatre History: 19th and 20th Century (3 credits)
- THSP 376 Theatre History: Asian (3 credits)
- THSP 455 Advanced Direction of Plays (3 credits)
- THSP 474 Dramatic Criticism (3 credits)
