Eligibility for Admission

1. Completion of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or other standardized basic skills test required by the State of Minnesota before enrolling in ED 3101 and ED 3102 or any other Education course.

2. A minimum overall GPA of 2.50 in order to enroll in ED 3101 and ED 3102.

3. Completion of ED 3101 with a grade of Satisfactory (S) and ED 3102 with at least a C grade.

4. Student awareness of the following: Evidence confirmed by the Board of Review of any psychological, behavioral or physical disorder that would prevent the applicant from carrying out the duties of a teacher shall be grounds for non-admission to the program.

5. Application for admission to teacher education, including satisfactory completion of the TE1, TE2 or TE3, Department of Professional Education planning document, and letter of reference from an instructor.

Retention and Completion

The Department has spelled out standards for retention in and completion of the program, including the hearing and appeals process, in the Handbook for Education Majors.

Clinical Experiences: Student Teaching and Internships

Education majors participate in early classroom experiences and have a variety of clinical opportunities in addition to student teaching. All students work in classrooms at diverse age levels as a part of their major. A year-long internship program for seniors is available. International student teaching experiences can be arranged in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Student teacher placement is made by the Director of Clinical Experiences in Professional Education. NO STUDENT MAY ARRANGE HIS OR HER OWN STUDENT TEACHING PLACEMENT. All students participating in student teaching, in early clinical experiences, or in practice in school settings are required first to obtain professional liability insurance.

Internship Program

The internship experience, also called the "Internship," is an alternative teacher education program that involves an academic year placement in an elementary or secondary school. The internship is designed for seniors who have completed course work in their majors and minors or fields of emphasis, and who will graduate at the conclusion of the internship experience. A prescribed program of study must be followed by student participation in the internship program. For additional information, contact the Director of Clinical Experiences, EA 342.
