A teacher is a reflective professional who promotes cognitive and affective learning in students. Today's educator has knowledge of human development, of the art and science of education, of specific subject matters, and of the value and importance of cultural diversity.

Bemidji State University was founded as a teacher education institution. The Department of Professional Education, building on that history, has developed a Teacher Education Model that determines the outcomes for its majors. It is based on six goal areas: Liberal Education, accommodation of diverse learner needs, understanding of current teaching methods, knowledge of educational research, reflective professional development, and collaboration with parents and professionals. The Model is fully described in the Department's Handbook for Education Majors.

Alert:

New State of Minnesota teacher licensure rules may go into effect Fall 1998. Before registering for classes, please consult the revised Handbook for Teacher Education Students, available in the office of the Department of Education.
