Middle School Licensure

The Middle School Licensure program is available to majors in either elementary or secondary education. Program requirements may be met through the satisfactory completion of a minimum of 16 semester credits or the equivalent. This is to be accomplished through the completion of the required courses in each of the areas listed. It is very important that all course selections be made only after consulting with an advisor.

Alert: New State of Minnesota teacher licensure rules may go into effect Fall 1998. Before registering for classes, please consult the revised Handbook for Teacher Education Students, available in the office of the Department of Education.

Elementary Background

Program for Persons with Licensure in the Elementary School or Persons Completing an Elementary Teacher Education Program.

I. Required Courses

ED 3160 Philosophy and Organization of the Middle School (2 credits)
ED 3600 Study of the Learner with Special Needs (3 credits)
or ED 4710 Mainstreaming Exceptional Learners (2 credits)
ED 4830 Student Teaching - Secondary (5 credits)
PSY 2237 Lifespan Development (4 credits)

Subtotal 13-14 Credits

II. Required Subject Matter Specialization

A minimum of 8 semester credits in a single academic licensure field is required. The selection of these courses should be made with, and must be approved by, the coordinator of the Middle Level Licensure Program. Licensure is available in: English/Language Arts, French, German, Health, Mathematics, Science (Life, Earth, or Physical), Secondary Developmental Reading, Social Studies, Spanish, or Theatre/Speech.

Secondary Background

ED 3600 Study of the Learner with Exceptional Needs(2 credits)
or ED 4710 Mainstreaming Exceptional Learners (2 credits)
ED 4730 Diagnostic and Remedial Instruction in Reading (3 credits)
ED 4820 Student Teaching - Elementary (0-5 credits)
ED 4737 Developmental Reading in Secondary School Teaching (2 credits)
PSY 2237 Lifespan Development (4 credits)

Subtotal 16-21 Credits

II. Required Secondary Subject Area Major or Minor

The above program is in addition to a secondary subject area major or minor, which includes a methods course or courses.
