II. Required Career Proficiency

Current State of Minnesota Licensure requirements include work that varies in length and type from one program to another. Advisors in the Vocational Education program will assist students in obtaining work experience approval from the appropriate state office. The following types of experience may be awarded semester hours of credit that will count toward degree requirements up to the maximum semester hours indicated.

Two years of successful, verified post high school technical training in an approved private, public, military or technical school up to two years worth of semester credits. (32 semester credits)

Up to three years of work experience in a technical or business occupation. Documentation must be provided that certifies the experience. Credits awarded that would count toward degree requirements up to the maximum of 32 semester credits.

Combination of A and B up to 64 semester credits.

Individual evaluation of successful teaching/training experience in a vocational/technical program 1-12 semester hours.

Four years or more - 12 semester credits

Three years - 9 semester credits

Two years - 6 semester credits

One year - 3 semester credits

Vocational Licensure

Because courses vary according to licensure chosen and because of licensure requirement changes, students should contact the Director of Vocational Education for current information. The teacher training institution (BSU) does not license the vocational teacher. The Board of Teaching approves licensure for secondary vocational education and the Technical College Board approves postsecondary and adult vocational licensure. For the purposes of the baccalaureate degree a minimum of 30 semester credits must be taken in residence. Any courses taught on extension at an area technical college at an approved vocational center or through the External Learning Center of Bemidji State University will be considered as courses in residence.
