The Department of Technological Studies offers a variety of programs with a common thematic core centered on using the technological problem-solving model to create new opportunities, design creative solutions to address difficult challenges, and improve operations in business, industry, and modern enterprises.

The department offers a nationally accredited* Bachelor of Science program in Industrial Technology, with emphasis areas in Construction Management, Manufacturing Management, Manufacturing Technology, and Virtual Modeling. The department also offers Master of Science programs in Industrial Technology and in Technology/Career and Technical Education. Along with the associated Bachelor of Applied Science program in Technology Management, these degree options offer both four-year and returning students the opportunity to prepare for leadership roles in modern enterprises.

Students who wish to pursue careers in the engineering aspects of industry can enroll in the Bachelor of Science programs in Engineering Technology and Control Engineering Technology. These degree options are offered as traditional, on-campus programs with considerable hands-on, interactive laboratory content. Some of this high technology equipment has been the result of being selected as a Center of Excellence in Manufacturing and Applied Engineering (360 ° ). Returning students have the option to enroll in the Bachelor of Applied Science program in Applied Engineering, which is offered online or on campus for working professionals who have either an Associate of Science, an Associate of Applied Science degree, or a diploma or certificate and wish to complete a Bachelor’s degree.

The department offers two degree programs that are designed to articulate specifically with accompanying Associate of Applied Science degree programs at Northwest Technical College. The Bachelor of Applied Science programs in Construction Site Management and Prototype Engineering Technology are offered in partnership with the department and many of the courses are taught on the Bemidji State University campus. The Construction Site Management program prepares students to become managers in the residential, commercial, or heavy industrial construction fields. Students wishing to develop a combination of skills in the model making and digital prototyping fields can pursue the Prototype Engineering program, which is the only four-year program of its kind in the United States and is nationally recognized for the skills and talents of its graduates.

The Bachelor of Science in Design Technology offers students a unique and exciting opportunity to pursue careers that demand excellence in a combination of technical, creative, and artistic capabilities. Students are able to specialize in digital media or in Exhibit Design, which is another four-year specialization unique to Bemidji State University. All Design Technology students benefit from a portfolio review process, a graduation requirement that offers them the opportunity to present their professional portfolios to leaders in their industries from across the nation. Students transferring from a MnSCU Community and/or Technical College with an Associate degree in a related design field may be eligible for articulated transfer into the Design Technology program.

Students who wish to pursue a career in teaching or advance their current teaching careers have a number of options. The Bachelor of Science program in Career and Technical Education offers a licensure option for students who wish to teach in Career and Technical Education in grades 7-12 of the school system and a non-licensure option for students who wish to teach at the two-year college level or to become trainers in business and industry. The Bachelor of Science in Technology Education gives students the opportunity to become licensed teachers for grades 5-12 in the field of Technology Education. The Master of Science in Technology/Career and Technical Education offers students the ability to enhance their teaching credentials and, in the case of teachers who do not yet have licensure, the ability to pursue licensure. The department also offers a series of graduate-level courses in Technology and Career and Technical Education for those interested in pursuing a graduate program.

Credit Requirement

Transfer Students: At least one-third of the credits to be included in the major must be successfully completed at Bemidji State University.
