Areas of Study

Biology is the science of life. Biologists study all living things and their interactions with their environments. The study of humans as biological beings helps us to understand ourselves as organisms. The study of other life forms helps us to understand them and the world we share.

Because the field of biology extends to so many areas--from viruses to mastodons--it offers diverse opportunities for personal and professional study and growth. The liberal education student can achieve an understanding of the human self and its relation to other life; the career-oriented biology student can prepare to work in areas such as genetic manipulation and organismic communication that may revolutionize life in the twenty-first century. Both will be enriched by knowledge of the living world we inhabit.

Communication Proficiency: Biology courses numbered 300 and above will require each student to complete either a written or an oral project as specified by the instructor. Biology, Aquatic Biology and Life Science majors must register for and pass Biology 300, Writing Certification prior to graduation. Students should complete this course early in their junior year.
