200 INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE-W (4 credits). An introduction to environmental science emphasizing biological, ecological, chemical, physical, and social principles underlying major environmental issues; examination of the impacts of human activities and the technological options for environmental protection. Prerequisites: English 123 or equivalent; sophomore standing. (Applies to Liberal Education Area VI ).

292 DIRECTED GROUP STUDY-F (3 credits). When taken as Environmental Controversies Seminar, the following description applies: Staff and student presentations followed by group discussions of classic and current problems in environmental quality control. Prerequisites: ENVR 200.

350 ECOTOXICOLOGY-S (Alternate Years) (4 credits). Principles of toxicology applied to environmental pollution and impacts. Study of pollutant behavior and effects in ecosystems, with emphasis on practical and theoretical definitions of stress in biological systems. Prerequisites: BIOL 113 or 123, BIOL 261; CHEM 113 or 123.

410 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY-W (4 credits). Intensive study of biogeochemical cycles of natural and man-made pollutants including transformations, transport, fate and persistence mechanisms. Environmental effects, long-term impacts, and methods of treatment/prevention are discussed. Prerequisites: BIOL 113 or 123 and CHEM 113 or 123.

415 POLLUTANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT-S (Alternate Years) (3 credits). An overview of major environmental pollutants, with a focus on the dynamics of processes controlling transport, fate, bioaccumulation and effects. Prerequisites: ENVR 410.

420 WASTEWATER TREATMENT-S (3 credits). Introduction to the principal methods for treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters, and for the disposal of treated effluents and sludges. Prerequisites: BIOL 113 or 123; CHEM 113 or 123; MATH 114 or 142 or 146; or consent of instructor.

421 ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND POLICY (4 credits). Environmental laws, regulations, and policies regarding waste management and pollution will be overviewed. Prerequisites: ENVR 292.

422 SAMPLING, ANALYSIS, AND QUALITY ASSURANCE (4 credits). Methods of sampling and analysis of air, water, soil and other environmental compartments will be described in lecture and experienced in laboratory sessions. The focus is on regulations and prescribed protocols for environmental field and lab work. Prerequisites: ENVR 421, one year of college chemistry, and statistics.

423 AIR POLLUTION TECHNOLOGY (4 credits). Indepth overview of sources and types of air pollution, major environmental impacts, regulations and technologies for control and clean up. Prerequisites: ENVR 421, Calculus I, one year of college chemistry, and one year of college physics.

424 WASTE MANAGEMENT (4 credits). An overview of the solid and hazardous waste situation at the local, state, national, and international level. The focus on management will include a systems approach to prevention, control, and remediation of wastes. Prerequisites: CHEM 233, ENVR 410 (or 415), MATH 241, and one year of college physics.

425 HAZARDOUS WASTE REMEDIATION (3 credits). Regulations and methods for remediating hazardous wastes will be discussed and evaluated using case studies. Prerequisites: CHEM 233, ENVR 410 (or 415), ENVR 421, ENVR 424, MATH 241, and one year of college physics.

426 RISK ASSESSMENT (3 credits). In depth study of methodologies for human and environmental risk assessment, with a focus on hazardous wastes. Case studies will be evaluated and compared. Prerequisites: BIOL 261, ENVR 350, ENVR 421, ENVR 424, statistics, and one year of college chemistry.

427 ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITING (3 credits). Overview of systematic auditing techniques with focus on regulatory compliance, liability, environmental awareness, and ethics. Prerequisites: CHEM 233, ENVR 410 (or 415), ENVR 421, and ENVR 424.

440 ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY-F (4 credits). Fundamental aspects of microbiology and biochemistry as related to land production, environmental pollution and water quality control processes. The role of major groups of microorganisms as pollutants, as purifying agents, and as agents of biochemical changes, and ecological importance of each group in the environment. Prerequisites: BIOL 113 or 123; BIOL 371; CHEM 113 or 123. CHEM 332 is recommended.

491 DIRECTED INDEPENDENT STUDY (arr. credits). The following description may apply: Guided independent study of analytical techniques employed in the chemical and biological assessment of environmental quality. Prerequisites: Consent of instructor.

499 THESIS (3 credits). The following description may apply: Independent research leading to a written thesis. Students may do original work or literature reviews on approved environmental topics. Prerequisites: Senior Standing, Environmental Studies Major.
