Indian Studies Course Descriptions

105 INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN STUDIES (3 credits). Provides an introduction to the study of the American Indian from the perspectives, terminology, and tools of the disciplines of anthropology, art, education, history, languages, political science, and sociology. The course is designed to present a short set of lectures on the approaches of each discipline, a set of lectures on issues in American Indian life, culture, and finally on how each discipline can be used in developing understanding of those issues and values. (Applies to Liberal Education Area VI, Area VII ).

305 TRIBAL GOVERNMENT (4 credits). This course offers the students a deeper understanding of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and governmental institutions as well as powers, relationships, and legislative actions affecting their experience.

321 AMERICAN INDIAN LANDS (4 credits). A geographical analysis of Indian lands of the United States including the physical, economic, cultural, and recreational aspects. In addition the course will review aspects of the Federal-Indian relationship including law, treaties, judicial cases, jurisdiction, and current issues related to Indian land tenure. Prerequisites: GEOG 201, 202, 203. May also be taken as GEOG 321.

325 OJIBWE CULTURE (4 credits). Surveys aspects of and observances and changes in Ojibwe culture from the contact period to the present. May also be taken as ANTH 325. Prerequisites: ANTH 101 and 210.

405 FEDERAL INDIAN LAW (4 credits). The American Indian enjoys and suffers a unique legal status. This class will survey the Federal laws, cases, treaties, agreements, Presidential proclamations, and executive orders, which serve as the foundation for their unique legal rights as well as their problems. Prerequisites: ENGL 121, 122, 123; INST 305; POL 200.

415 CONTEMPORARY INDIAN STUDIES (4 credits). An in depth study of selected topics affecting American Indian life in the late 20th century. Prerequisites: INST 212, 305; POL 200; and SOWK 219.
