101 FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (4 credits). Fundamental concepts and basic philosophy underlying physical education. Survey of trends in the field of physical education. History, present philosophy, and objectives analyzed and examined.

102 BASIC TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS I (3 credits). Analysis and practice of the fundamental techniques, skills, rules, basic strategies, and safety procedures of flag football, soccer, speedball, golf, tennis, and conditioning. Required of all students majoring or minoring in physical education.

103 BASIC TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS II (3 credits). Analysis and practice of the fundamental techniques, skills, rules, basic strategies, and safety procedures for basketball, volleyball, tumbling activities & rhythms, and other appropriate activities. Required of all students majoring and minoring in physical education. Prerequisite: PHED 102 or consent of instructor.

104 BASIC TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS III (3 credits). Analysis and practice of the fundamental techniques, skills, rules, strategies, and safety procedures for weight training, softball, track and field, new games, and other appropriate activities. Required of all students majoring or minoring in physical education. Prerequisite: PHED 103 or consent of instructor.

110 BEGINNING SWIMMING (1 credit). For non-swimmers. Emphasis on personal adjustment to the water, basic strokes, and fundamentals of water safety. Opportunity to earn the American Red Cross Beginners and Advanced Beginners certificates. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

111 INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING (1 credit). For swimmers who have the ability to jump into deep water, swim a front stroke 25 yards, and swim on the back 15 yards. Emphasis on five basic strokes, elementary diving, and related aquatic skills. Opportunity to earn American Red Cross Intermediate and Swimmers certificate. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

112 SWIMMERS (1 credit). For swimmers who can swim in good form 25 yards each of any three of the five basic strokes. Emphasis on developing and refining nine basic strokes, diving, and other advanced aquatic skills. Preparation for Water Safety Instructor. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

113 WATER SKIING (Summers only) (1 credit). Introduction to practice of the fundamental skills of water skiing. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

114 SPRINGBOARD DIVING (1 credit). Background in the fundamentals and skills of springboard diving. Includes instruction and practice in the five basic diving groups: forward, backward, reverse, inward, and twisting. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ). (May not be offered every year.)

117 ANGLING (Summers only) (1 credit). Introduction to the fundamental skills of bait casting, spin casting, and basic elementary angling techniques. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

122 A LIFE-STYLE FOR WELLNESS (3 credits). An examination of common risk factors in life-styles. Provides information on making life-style changes. Emphasis on self-esteem, nutritional habits, exercise habits and stressful behaviors. (Applies to Liberal Education Area VI ).

124 TECHNIQUES OF NEUROMUSCULAR RELAXATION (1 credit). Introduction to and practice in Jacobson's Neuromuscular relaxation to improve the student's awareness of muscular tension. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

125 BODY MECHANICS (1 credit). Lecture on basic concepts in physical education, as well as laboratory experiences in various physical activity programs, including cardiovascular fitness, weight training, calisthenics, and flexibility. 126 CYCLING (1 credit). Introduction to and practice in the skill of cycling and bicycle maintenance. Use of a bicycle for touring, fitness, and transportation will be discussed. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ). (May not be offered every year.)

127 EXERCISE WALKING (1 credit). Using walking as a training device for fitness and conditioning while preserving the fun of the activity. Explores the scientific and health benefits of walking as well as the various types and purposes of walking. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

128 JOGGING AND CONDITIONING (1 credit). Attainment of optimum physical efficiency through selected programs of exercise. (Applies to Liberal Education Area III ).

201 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES (2 credits). The efficiency phase of the course is designed to develop the competency in the area of basic gymnastics for the elementary child. This will include practice and discussion of the fundamentals of gymnastics. The movement phase deals with the scientific principles that form the basis for developing a complete concept and understanding of human movement. (May not be offered every year.)

202 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GAMES AND RHYTHMS (2 credits). The selection, practice, and application of games and rhythms which aid in developing desirable skills, attitudes, and appreciations for activity by the elementary school child (K-6).

220 PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3 credits). Fundamental concepts and basic philosophy underlying physical education. (May not be offered every year.)

260 SPORT PHYSIOLOGY (3 credits). Body composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and strength as related to training/conditioning and sport participation are discussed. This course is part of the coaching certification program.

261 ATHLETIC TRAINING (3 credits). Prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. Theory and practice of taping and rehabilitation techniques.

264 WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (4 credits). For the training of Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate may be earned. Prerequisite: See instructor for details.

265 TRAINING COURSE FOR CANOE INSTRUCTORS (2 credits). For the training of Red Cross Canoe Instructors. American Red Cross Canoe Instructor's Certificate may be earned. (May not be offered every year.) Prerequisite: Current American Red Cross Basic Canoeing Certificate.

280 METHODS OF TEACHING DANCE (2 credits). Techniques and method of teaching fundamental and creative rhythms - folk, square and social dance. (May not be offered every year.) Prerequisite: PHED 160, 165, or 167.

301 ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3 credits). The study and practice of teaching physical education to handicapped children in the public school.

302 KINESIOLOGY (4 credits). A study of human movement based on biological, mechanical, and maturational principles. Prerequisite: BIOL 203 or 321.

310 HISTORY OF SPORT (3 credits). Historical survey of sport and physical education from ancient times to the present. The different systems of physical education and contemporary developments.

311 SOCIOLOGY OF SPORT (3 credits).The study of sport as a social institution. Topics covered include sports and socialization, sports in educational settings, economics and sports, religion and sports, sexism and racism in sports, and sport as a microcosm of society. This is an interdivisional course also listed as SOC 311.

312 PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORT (3 credits). Covers the major aspects of the psychology of sports behavior. Includes certain guides to show how teaching and learning may be applied to the coaching of sports and to bring out the relationship of meaningful learning to successful athletic coaching.

339 SPORT MANAGEMENT (4 credits). A critical and constructive examination of the various programs involving sports management in non-school settings. Discussion and lectures on promoting and administering sport programs.

340 ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (4 credits). Discussion and lectures on administrative policies and activities, curriculum development, intramural athletics, staff, intercollegiate athletics, financing, care of equipment, and publicity. Prerequisite: PHED 101.

341 ADMINISTRATION OF ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES (3 credits). A critical and constructive examination of the athletic program for high schools, plus a discussion of the responsibilities and problems of the teacher and administration of such a program. (May not be offered every year.)

342 PHYSICAL AND OTHER HEALTH IMPAIRMENTS (3 credits). An overview of the special education service delivery system and the major disabilities as required by federal regulations.

343 MOTOR DEVELOPMENT (3 credits). A study of the development of motor acts in the preschool and elementary school child that are essential to the acquisition of the motor skills of work and play throughout life.

347 DEVELOPMENTAL/ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR SPHEDCIAL POPULATIONS I (4 credits). Provides an overview of Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) including the legal aspects of service delivery in Special Education, development of Individual Education Plans, the organization and development of curriculum, instructional adaptations, and current issues in the field. Prerequisites: PHED 301, 342, ED 371.

348 DEVELOPMENTAL/ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR SPHEDCIAL POPULATIONS II (4 credits). Focus on formal and informal assessment, evaluation, reporting results, IEP development, entry/exit criteria and program planning. The role of consultation and supervision in Developmental Adapted Physical Education is also explored. Prerequisites: PHED 347.

349 SEMINAR IN DEVELOPMENTAL/ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1 credit). Presentation and discussion on current research and issues in Developmental Adapted Physical Education and Special Education are the focus of this class. Prerequisites: PHED 348, ED 345.

350 PRACTICUM IN DEVELOPMENTAL/ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (6 credits). Students complete supervised practice in teaching children and young adults with disabilities in the physical education setting. Prerequisites: Completion of all coursework in the DAPE Licensure Program.

351 PRACTICUM IN SPORTS INFORMATION (3 credits). Students work in a sports information office gaining practical application of their skills in reporting sports, collecting statistics and preparing written and broadcast material for the media. Graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Prerequisites: MASC 202 News Reporting.

361 BASEBALL COACHING (3 credits). Instructional techniques of team and individual play. Problems of organizing teams, and conducting practices and games.

362 BASKETBALL COACHING (3 credits). Organization and preparation for interscholastic competition. Methods of teaching skills and conducting practice. Discussion of various systems of offense and defense, rules, scouting, and psychology of coaching.

363 FOOTBALL COACHING (3 credits). Methods of teaching the game. Different defensive and offensive systems. Selection of team. Methods of conducting practices and handling players.

364 ICE HOCKEY COACHING (3 credits). Instructional techniques of team and individual play, practice, rules organization, and coaching theory. Public relations and budget. Problems of equipment, rink maintenance, and game preparations. Organization and administration of park board hockey programs.

365 SWIMMING COACHING (3 credits). Developing knowledge and understanding of the applications of various laws of motion, leverage, and flotation. Swimming and diving in the coaching of competitive swimming. Pool operation, plus rules and organizations of swimming meets. Class participation includes classroom and laboratory experiences. (May not be offered every year.

366 TRACK AND FIELD COACHING (3 credits). Methods and techniques for teaching and coaching the various track and field events. Training and conditioning for each event. The organization and management of relays and track meets. Prerequisite: PHED 140 or athletic experience.

367 WRESTLING COACHING (3 credits). Problems of organizing teams and conducting practices and meets. Instructional techniques studied and practiced. Weight control, dietary, and safety problems considered. (May not be offered every year.)

369 VOLLEYBALL COACHING (3 credits). Lecture and application of coaching techniques and strategies as they relate to volleyball. Prerequisite: PHED 178 or athletic experience.

370 GOLF COACHING (3 credits). Discussion and application of the underlying concepts essential for the teaching/coaching of golf. Covers the history and rules of golf, equipment selection, conditioning and practicing with a purpose, basic fundamentals and functions, irons and woods, special situations, and competitive techniques.

371 TENNIS COACHING (3 credits). Discussion and application of fundamental concepts underlying the teaching/coaching of tennis. Covers singles and doubles rule interpretation, selecting of equipment, analyzing and development of skills, drills for physiological and psychological conditioning and for developing strategies, practice sessions, charting and evaluating techniques, team selection, and the conduct of matches and tournaments.

372 TECHNIQUES OF OFFICIATING - VOLLEYBALL (2 credits). Course content geared toward a national or local official's rating. Covers national or local official's requirements, interpretation of rules, study of fouls, signals, scoring, official's duties. Practice in officiating. (May not be offered every year.) Prerequisite: team playing experience.

373 TECHNIQUES OF OFFICIATING - BASKETBALL (2 credits). Course content geared toward a national or local official's rating. 374 TECHNIQUES OF OFFICIATING - FOOTBALL (2 credits). A study of the rules governing football, field mechanics, case book studies, and practical officiating experience (May not be offered every year.). Prerequisite: team playing experience.

380 TESTS & MEASUREMENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION (3 credits). The place and possibilities of measurements in physical education. Analytical survey of the present tests and measures. Techniques and procedures in planning and administering tests and measurements. Prerequisite: PHED 101.

387 PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (4 credits). The organization and content of physical education programs in the elementary school.

401 PHYSIOLOGY OF EXERCISE (3 credits). An examination of the effects of exercise on organs, muscles and other tissues of the body. Techniques for strength training, anaerobic and aerobic training are included, as well as other special topics related to exercise and performance. Prerequisite: BIOL 202.

402 EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION (3 credits). The theory and practice of evaluating physical fitness for the purpose of prescribing aerobic exercise to adults, both healthy and those with medical problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Prerequisite: PHED 401.

403 THERAPHEDUTIC REHABILITATION (3 credits). Introduction to the roles, modalities, and fundamentals of physical therapy and therapeutic recreation therapy. Prerequisites: PHED 261 or PHED 401.

413 LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF SPORT (3 credits). An overview of the field of sports law, with applications to amateur sport, professional sport, recreation and fitness settings. Key areas of the law are identified, and applications within the sports industry are studies. Provides information about the law and legal issues which may help the sport professional avoid litigation by foreseeing and preventing problems. Prerequisites: PHED 339 Sport Management.

450 PRACTICUM IN ATHLETIC COACHING (2 credits). Application of the principles and practices in athletic coaching. Full time practical coaching experience under the guidance and supervision of a licensed coach. This practicum must be done at the high school level. Appropriate forms must be files with the department chairperson. (May not be offered every year.) Prerequisites: ED 419 plus completion of at least 70 percent of Physical Education Major or Coaching Licensure Program.

491 DIRECTED INDEPENDENT STUDY (1 credit). Students may enroll and obtain activity course credit for participation in the intercollegiate athletic sports of: football, softball, cross country skiing, cross country, volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, cheerleaders, golf, tennis, baseball, and track and field. Approval from the coach must be obtained before enrollment and only one quarter hour may be earned in a given sport.

492 DIRECTED GROUP STUDY (1 credit). Readings and discussion in physical education and the allied fields. Required of all senior majors in physical education.

201 RECREATION LEADERSHIP (2 credits). Discussion of present trends in recreation, recreation's relation to physical education activities, methods of organizing activities for groups, materials available and problems of leadership. (May not be offered every year.)

204 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY RECREATION (3 credits). The scoPHED of community recreation and the basic social values of recreation in relation to other social institutions. Consideration of program content of community recreation programs. (May not be offered every year.)

261 TECHNIQUES OF SOCIAL RECREATION (1 credit). Types of games needed in informal social situations, such as mixers, icebreakers, and group games. (May not be offered every year.)

267 CAMPING TRENDS AND TECHNIQUES (2 credits). Exploration of camping trends, ethics, equipment, conservation and behavior. Practical application of principles related to outdoor camping skills and backpacking techniques. Overnight trips not required. (May not be offered every year.)

330 ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF RECREATION (3 credits). Discussion and lectures on recreational administrative policies and activities including school, community, hospital, and industrial recreation. (May not be offered every year.) Prerequisite: REC 201 and 204.

484 RECREATION FIELD EXPHEDRIENCE (3 credits). The field work should differ in types and intensity as the student progresses in the program. The total experience should be gained from at least two different types of agencies conducting recreation programs and possessing accepted standards of staff facilities and program. Field work experience includes: Observation, leadership, committee work, management of unit operations, participating in group experiences. Prerequisite: at least junior status and a minimum of 9 quarter hours of course-work in the recreation minor. NOTE: for recreation minors only.
